(This activity is in two parts.)
Part I Web Resources
Find the name of the composer and writer for the show In the Heights which just transferred to Broadway.
(Clue - it just had its OPENING NIGHT)
Find three types of Musical Theatre through history.
(Clue - they were all on STAGE)
What is the essence of acting?
Find three improvisation or warm-up games we haven't played yet.
What is an amphitheatre? What is a proscenium arch? A gobo? What are flats?
Name one comedy and one tragedy of Shakespeare.
Discover an interesting fact about either of these British theatres - The Rose Theatre, or The Globe
Find a picture of an ancient theatre, Greek or Roman.
What else did Tennessee Williams write apart from The Glass Menagerie which we read last year?
Part II Print and Database Resources
1. Using Athena in the “Library” folder of your Programs menu, write down the title and call number of a book
of monologues for your gender.
2. Write down the title and call number of the audio recording of one of your favorite musicals.
3. Does the Hall Library own the vocal score to the musical from #2? If your answer is “no”, write down
the name of one vocal score that can be checked out of the Hall Library.
4. Write down the name of a magazine in the library that has articles about theatre, dance, or music.
5. Go to www.cayermedia.com and click on iCONN on the top left. Scroll down to “Biography Resource Center.”
Click on “Category Browse” and choose “Actors.” Click on your favorite actor and write down his/her name and birthdate.
6. Using the Cayermedia website, click on “Literary Reference Center” (in red). Type in: william shakespeare characters.
Click on “Plot Summaries.” Click on any Shakespeare play from the list and read the character bios in that play.
List the title of the play you chose, the character, and one fact about him or her.
7. Using the Cayermedia website, click on “Nettrekker” (in blue). (If the next screen is NOT the search screen,
click on “Login” in the orange square.) When you get to the search screen, click on “Famous Person” under Features.
Scroll down to Occupation/Profession and check the box next to Entertainers/Musicians. Click Search.
Choose one entertainer and write down one fact about him or her.

Monologues and Character Analysis
1. Use Athena to locate a monologue of your choice.
2. Find the full text of the play, if available.
3. Use materials in the Reference collection as well as electronic resources to research your character.
Among the best electronic resources we have available are the following:
iCONN, especially the Discovering Collection database and the National Newspapers database which includes the NY Times and
the LA Times
